While it is true that they always look their best, aspiring beauty queens also have their own insecurities just as much as normal people. So, one can say that what Rosantonette Mendoza, candidate number 18 for this year’s Binibining Pilipinas, did as brave.
Last Thursday, March 8, Rosantonette shared how she struggled with her body for the past few years.
Hailing from Cavite, the contestant started her journey through pageantry at the young age of 15. Her first ever title was “Mutya ng Bacoor” back in 2007. This inspired her to join another beauty contest in the province just a year after–only this time, she ended up going home with self-doubt, instead of the crown.
“I was bashed in social media because I was too ‘FAT’ to be a beauty queen. Comments like, ‘Hala, parang nanay na,’ ‘ano ba ‘yan,’ ba’t may naligaw jan,’ and the likes.
After she landed a position in a retail company, everything started to snowball in her life. Rosantonette had a new found love with food–to the point that she became overweight and, ultimately, suffered from health problems.
“I was almost 90 kgs [200 lbs.]. I knew I lost it. I got tired easily, my sugar level was high, had a hard time breathing, lahat lahat na. I was very unhealthy.”
Thankfully, Rosanette stumbled upon the story of Miss Universe Canada 2016 Siera Bearchell one day. In the face of self-doubt, she has found hope from the plus-sized beauty queen to be “confidently beautiful with her body.”
And just two years ago on December 23, in time for her 25th birthday, Rosantonette started to work on her body and get back to doing what she loves the most: pageantry.
“It has always been my dream to become a Binibini. I knew I had to work extra hard for that goal, my last hoorah to join.I got myself a gym membership, hired a great trainer, prepped meals, diet. etc…lahat ng workout na-try ko na ata, bes.”
Now, Rosantonette has everyone at her mercy, including even her fitspiration, Siera herself. The beauty queen wrote:
“AMAZING! Rosantonette Mendoza messaged me when she decided to compete at Bb. Pilipinas (Official) NOW LOOK AT HER!!! She was body shamed in her younger pageant days and gave up pageantry and lost her self-esteem and self-confidence. She saw me at Miss Universe in the Philippines and was encouraged to give a pageant one last shot!! THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY! I am emotional because this is an example of how women encouraging women is SO POWERFUL!!!”
