If you were a ‘90s kid, then you still probably remember Romnick Sarmenta. Once a famous matinee idol, many probably wonder how the actor is doing now after he quit the showbiz industry. Well, believe it or not, the former actor is now the proud owner of a restaurant in Quezon City!
Far from his life under the spotlight, the actor opted to live a private life with his wife, former teen star Harlene Bautista. Raising their five kids together, it wasn’t long before the celebrity couple ventured into the food business.
In 2016, Romnick and Harlene opened a family-friendly restaurant named “Salu,” a word which comes from the Filipino word ‘salu-salo’ which means getting together and sharing meals.
True to its name, the restaurant offers authentic Filipino dishes, but served with a twist. For example, ‘kare-kare’, which usually uses ox tail and tripe, is cooked with lechon instead.
Harlene stressed how she and her husband wanted to introduce new takes on traditional Filipino dishes while staying true to their iconic taste. She said they also wanted to make their customers familiar with food from all over the country, such as ‘hardinera’ (a type of meatloaf made famous in Lucban), ‘balbacua’ (a consommé of tender meat originating from Visayas), and ‘tiula itum’ (black soup made popular in Mindanao).
Indeed, Romnick Sarmenta has come a long way from his life in the limelight and he seems to enjoy being a restaurateur.
