While many people want to live the way the society dictates, Maher I. Borhan from Cotabato City chose to discover the truth about himself and live in his own way despite people’s unfair judgment. He lived as a woman for years, until he reached high school and experienced strange changes in his body. When he finally went to college, he decided to have himself checked by an obstetrician-gynecologist. And that was when it all made sense to him when the doctor diagnosed him with the rare condition called “true hermaphroditism.” His flat chest, his vocal changes, his Adam’s apple, and still not experiencing menstruation at the age of 16, all in all were all the major factors of being an actual man.
Maher opened up about his condition in a lengthy Facebook post, published on March 20. He shared that his classmates when he was still living as a female regularly made fun of him, particularly his looks.
The confessor also narrated that he even attended the high school prom just like any girl his age at the time. He wore a gown, all dolled up, and walked in high heels. But despite his efforts to ignore what he was truly feeling, he felt as if he was alone.
Fast forward, in 2010, he took up an engineering course in college. That was also the time that he had himself checked and found out that he was a man. Unfortunately, even if he finally chose to be true to himself, he shared that people still treat him with prejudice. It has been eight years since he discovered his rare condition, but many still believe that what he did was a disgrace.
